”American Grammy Award-winning composer and beloved Minnesota artist, Stephen Paulus premiered his first opera, The Village Singer, in 1979, to great acclaim. This comic, one-act chamber work, rich with Paulus’ lush hymn settings, speaks to the heart of the mission of Raison d’Être Opéra, as it tells the poignant story of Candace Whitcomb, the church choir soloist whose established reputation is threatened by the emergence of gifted young soprano. The Benefit Reading, featured soprano Lucy Thrasher in the title role, along with a distinguished cast of local singers, which raised partial funding for a full production in May 2024.”
