Interpretations of Don Giovanni often rely on archetypes—either the Don is a sadistic monster or a charming seducer; the women are either victims or if given fuller characterizations, Donna Anna is frigid, Donna Elvira is a neurotic bitch, and Zerlina is a delicious, compliant, little morsel. In truth, Mozart and DaPonte have given us a more nuanced, ambivalent dramma giocoso—it is a DARK comedy with an ending worthy of Dante.
